On a bright sunny Wednesday, the year 5 and 6 children went for a maths day at Salisbury Racecourse. We were very privileged to go to places that members of the public are not allowed to go. We went to the stables to see horses arriving and being scanned for their unique microchipped number. This is to make sure that no cheating happens! After that we measured the parade ring, using a trundle wheel to see how far it is all the way round. We used this information to work out how many horses could potentially go into the ring to parade at any one time. Next we went into the jockey's changing room and were shown how jockeys are able to lose weight very quickly - by going into the sauna room. It was very hot in there!! We were then weighed on the jockey's weighing scales, before going to watch some of the horses parade round the ring. Finally we watched two races before coming back to school. It was an amazing opportunity and we were able to see how maths is used practically in life.
Today the children from Key Stage 2 went to the City Hall in Salisbury with many other children from other primary schools in Salisbury, to take part in a concert by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. We had been practicing a song written especially for the BSO called "Fairytales and Fantasy" by James Redwood since June. The Orchestra played music from 3 Fairytales - Sleeping Beauty, Baba Yaga and The Firebird. Finally, we all stood to sing our song, with backing from the full orchestra. It was an amazing sound!
Southills pre-school were visited by some feathery visitors this week and children from Diamond class were invited to spend some time asking questions and holding an African Owl! We were all very brave and held the owl on a special glove so that it's claws didn't hurt our hands. As well as the African owl, we saw a barn owl.
